AFCON 2023: South Africa ready for Super Eagles battle

IKEJA, Nigeria - Feb. 6, 2024 - PRLog -- The Super Eagles claimed victory in an entertaining match at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.  In a lively first half, Napoli's Victor's Osimhen narrowly missed with a looping header, while former Fulham loanee Ademola Lookman capitalized on a fluid team move to score from 10 yards out in the 41st minute.  Although it appeared that Pedro Goncalves' team had gone 2-0 down when Osimhen headed in Lookman's free-kick, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for offside. Late attempts by Osimhen and Zito Luvumbo kept the pressure on both sides, but Nigeria ultimately secured a well-deserved victory.

South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos has said his team is battle-ready for the semi-final clash with the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The Bafana Bafana earned a place in the last four after defeating Cape Verde 2-1 on penalties on Saturday night. Goalkeeper, Rowen Williams was the hero as he saved four spot kicks. "There was a lot of pressure in the match. Everyone wanted to qualify. This match was unlike the previous ones. We did not show the same performance as we had in previous matches," Broos said after the game. "The semi-final match will be different against Nigeria, which has good players like Lookman. We will not lose focus. The players will be in good condition, so we need to rest and recover to start our preparation". The encounter will take place at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake on Wednesday.
