Congleton's MP is 'out of step' with local people on Women's Reproductive Rights

CONGLETON, U.K. - Dec. 6, 2023 - PRLog -- Protesters braved freezing temperatures on Saturday to protest about the stance of Congleton's MP, Fiona Bruce, on women's reproductive rights. Organised by Women's Equality Party (WEP) Cheshire East Branch, the protest responded to the report published by the Good Law Project that Congleton's MP Fiona Bruce accepted £1737.92 in September 2023 and £927 in April 2019 from anti-abortion organisation Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) for travel and accommodation for speaking engagements and conference attendance.

WEP Cheshire East Branch Leader, Louise Bailey :

"We organised this protest because Fiona Bruce has recently been associated with ADF, which was instrumental in overturning the 'Roe vs Wade' ruling in the United States. This has allowed several states to make abortion effectively illegal, and we now have the situation where women in Texas are having to travel to Mexico to access healthcare.

"Here in the UK, Fiona Bruce's association with ADF is consistent with her record in Parliament, which is out of step with public opinion and against women's reproductive rights. We will not allow our rights to be rolled back in the UK the way we have seen in the US."

WEP Councillor Kay Wesley :

"It was wonderful to receive so much support from the community during the protest and to see how many people took to the streets with us to demand that no one be criminalised for seeking healthcare.

"This reflects the national picture, with almost 90 per cent of people in favour of a woman's right to an abortion. What many people don't realise is that this right is not built into our laws, because a woman has to seek the permission of two doctors to get an abortion. It is the only area of healthcare where the patient has to have the doctor's consent, not the other way round.

"Abortion is healthcare and it must be free, safe and legal. That's why the Women's Equality Party would like the law changed so that abortion is taken out of criminal law once and for all."

Independent Councillor Mark Edwardson :

"Kay has explained my thoughts exactly, and I find it very irritating that women still have to fight for equality in a civilised society. I am also very alarmed by Fiona Bruce's association with this fundamentalist Christian hard-right organisation, ADF. It is not just about abortion, it's about a creeping fascism in the UK, and Fiona Bruce is either being used, or is a willing participant, in that agenda."
