July 20, 2007 - PRLog -- PROVO, Utah — July 19, 2007 — The word “blog” wasn’t included the dictionary until this year, but most Internet users seem to be pretty familiar with the trendy term — in fact, a new survey shows that one in ten Americans have jumped on the blogging bandwagon.

Qualtrics, a market leader in the web-based survey software industry surveyed all 50 states to discover Americans’ recent passion for blogging. Thirteen percent of respondents indicated they maintained a blog and 16 percent of those who have one, are making money from it.

“Individuals who spend a lot of time online hear about, read about or even blog about blogging, every single day,” says Stuart Orgill, Qualtrics Director of Corporate Solutions. “We were interested to find out how many people were out there with blogs — and what topics they were writing about.”

Survey data showed that the majority of respondents — 61 percent — reported their blogs were personal in nature, serving as a journal or family history. Politics was the runner up topic at 17 percent, with religion, technology, business and sports as other popular blog subjects — in that order.

The survey found that 54 percent of respondents use hosting services independent of the major hosting providers; however of the more traditional blogging sites, blogger.com was the most popular — preferred by 23 percent of respondents.

“It’s interesting to observe as a trend like this sweeps over the world so quickly,” Orgill says. “It just goes to show how much can change in the online world in just a few years.”
