Why Baby Boomers are Retiring Abroad

A recent survey found that ten percent of baby-boomers are interested in retiring outside of the United States. Brazil Property Group President Michael Greene explains why.

Dec. 21, 2007 - PRLog -- The approximately 76 million members of the baby boomer generation show a great interest in retiring to Central America. Most of these retirees will head for Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Belize or Brazil, all of which have beautiful beaches that thousands of Americans have already discovered.

But only one of these countries has a highly developed infrastructure, the likelihood of growing into a major world economy, a burgeoning tourism market, and affordable property prices—Brazil. Here’s why Americans will start retiring to Brazil:

1)   Bargain house prices
About two hours from Rio de Janeiro and half an hour from Buzios, the jetset destination, there’s an oceanfront city called Arraial do Cabo. The city holds the attraction of being close to major cities, accessible to tourism, and close to gorgeous beaches, delicious restaurants, and world-class shopping. Beachfront houses start at $150,000. And there are more cities just as welcoming as Arraial do Cabo.

2)   Developed infrastructure
Brazil’s excellent airport and highway system means that most Americans will feel completely at home.

3)   Beachfront availability
Whether in Florida or in Colombia, beach front property is always a valuable investment. Brazil is no different. Most Brazil Property Group clients plan to live in the US for the summer months and escape to their Brazilian getaway for the winter. They are always shocked and delighted to hear that it would cost them about 1/20 the price of buying a frontline beach house in Florida to buy a similar property in Brazil.

4)   Domestic help
American retirees to Brazil can afford a standard of living that they could never imagine having in the United States. Live-in cleaning staff, for example, charge less than £300 a month in many parts of the country. Some Brazil Property Group clients have sent their maids to culinary courses so they can learn to be gourmet cooks as well. Having someone to cook a gourmet meal, clean after a party, take out the trash, pick up the groceries, and do the laundry means that homeowners can truly enjoy their retirement, and spend more time on the beach!

5)   Healthcare
Full-time accredited nurses charge approximately a tenth of the price someone might pay in the United States.

6)   Vibrant culture
Brazil’s myriad cultures and traditions make it a fascinating and rewarding place to live. Active retirees can look forward to local festivals, holidays, film festivals, and of course, Carnival—in other words, Brazil offers much more than a gated community in Boca.

7)   Investment potential
While prices in Costa Rica and many other Central American countries have already peaked, Brazil has an excess of available oceanfront property. A basket of recently passed measures mean that prices will rise soon—developers are buying beachfront property, and a new domestic mortgage system will give millions of middle-class Brazilian buyers newfound access to the same properties American investors desire. Michael Greene, Brazil Property Group founder, says that buying in Brazil today is similar to buying property in Costa Rica in the 1980s. Prices can only move up from here.

8)   Beautiful people everywhere
The Brazilian people are kind, considerate, intrigued by Americans, and gorgeous—one survey showed that almost half of all professional models come from Brazil. Considering that Brazil has three percent of the world’s population, that statistic is a good sign for anyone looking for a significant other.

9)   Safety
Safety in South America is only a challenge in certain well-known dangerous areas, namely, the slums of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. Within the last year, in a move to enhance Brazil’s chances in securing the 2016 Olympics, the Brazilian government pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to make Brazil safer than ever.

10) Distance and access
Brazil is certainly farther from the United States than any Central American country. However, most of the travel time to Brazil is on the airplane, as opposed to the aging boats or unsafe trucks that carry retirees to their homes in remote Central American locales. And anyway, getting there is half the adventure—since you’re saving so much on the house prices, why not fly first class?

These factors are only a few of the reasons that 7.6 million baby boomers plan to buy a property abroad within the next 20 years. Get in early by letting the licensed brokers and sales agents at Brazil Property Group assist in finding you a property to meet your retirement needs.
