Trillium Power Applauds Removal of Offshore Wind Deferral by MNR

Trillium Power Applauds Removal of Offshore Wind Deferral by MNR and believes that the development of Trillium Power Wind 1 will become the catalyst for a significant increase in sustainable economic development in Ontario.

Jan. 20, 2008 - PRLog -- Toronto, Ontario, Canada – Trillium Power Wind Corporation (Trillium Power) announced today that it is strongly encouraged by Ontario Minister of Natural Resources Donna Cansfield’s recent announcement that the deferral on offshore wind development has been lifted. This is a significant reaffirmation of the Ontario government’s commitment to the renewable energy sector and to sustainable development.

John Kourtoff, President and CEO of Trillium Power, stated “it has been our consistently stated belief that the Government of Ontario is firmly committed to the development of reliable large scale renewable energy in Ontario for both the clean energy it can provide as well as the significant long-term economic, environmental and social benefits that it can bring to the province. We have worked very diligently over the past 14 months to explain the unique differences between onshore, near-shore and offshore wind to many important stakeholder groups including the government. We strongly applaud Premier McGuinty, Minister Cansfield and the Ontario Cabinet for their leadership on this issue and their understanding of the important role that true offshore wind power can play in the Province of Ontario.”

“We believe that the Ontario Government has sent a bold signal to offshore wind developers, the financial community, regulatory bodies, and permitting authorities and therefore we look forward to working together with these organizations to deliver clean, reliable, renewable energy to the citizens of Ontario while remaining sensitive to local communities and their interests so that economic, environmental and social benefits can be maximized for the Province of Ontario.”

As Ontario’s signature offshore wind site, Trillium Power Wind 1 has the unique opportunity to generate a very high amount of electricity per unit area, based on World-class wind power density measurements, while producing a very small environmental footprint. Trillium Power Wind 1 will have an installed capacity of over 710 MW, which is enough power for well over 250,000 Ontario homes. In addition, the development of Trillium Power Wind 1 will further strengthen Ontario’s leadership role in helping Canada meet its Kyoto reduction targets for greenhouse gases, treaty obligations for the reduction of mercury and other hazardous emissions as well as reducing smog-causing pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide.

John Kourtoff further stated that “through a co-ordinated approach between Trillium Power, the Government of Ontario, the Government of Canada and local communities we believe that the development of Trillium Power Wind 1 will become the catalyst for a significant increase in sustainable economic development and innovative energy solutions, long-term ‘green’ new economy jobs in Ontario and particularly in the local mainland areas of Eastern Ontario that are near to the planned mid-Lake Ontario offshore development area.”
