BBY team win Sydney to Gold Coast Yacht Race in 40 Foot Division

The BBY team aboard Krakatoa II won the Sydney to Gold Coast 40 Foot Division despite trying conditions forcing more than 10 boats to retire from the race.

July 29, 2008 - PRLog -- Proving their strong navigational skills in the markets and on the water, the all star banking team aboard Rod Skellet’s “Karakatoa II” won first place in the 40 foot division of the Sydney to Gold Coast yacht race today.

Derivative trader Kirk Bayvel from Deutsche Bank, along with BBY’s CEO Glenn Rosewall, were racing for the first time aboard the race to the Gold Coast along with Krakatoa II’s regular crew.

Trying conditions continued throughout the race with bitterly cold temperatures, tempestuous winds and a fierce thunderstorm hitting the fleet.

Glenn Rosewall said he enjoyed the challenge.

“At one stage lightning was coming from all directions and we lost all of our electrics, and had the option of turning to shore or forging ahead. We chose the latter and proved that there’s a lot to be said for hanging in there when the elements get tough. This is the perfect example of what can happen when you don’t give up.”

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia reported that three boats retired due to damage sustained on the first day and night and a further ten boats retired due to damage sustained in the adverse weather conditions. Of the 75 yachts that began the race, 61 crossed the finish line.

Captain of Krakatoa II and head of Global Equity Markets at BBY, Rod Skellet, was very pleased with the results from his crew.

“They worked hard and proved up to the test. I’m proud of their efforts, particularly as this was the first race for some of them. We were so happy to cross that finish line, and this is a good start to Krakatoa II’s blue water point score campaign,” he said.
