Aug. 14, 2008 - PRLog -- The Silver Star Families of America, an organization formed to remember, honor and assist the wounded and ill of our Armed Forces, has announced a new program.

Starting today, members of the Merchant Marines who have served during war time and were wounded can apply for the coveted Silver Star Banner.  Those wounded MUST have served during the time they were federalized and the wounds MUST have been caused by enemy action.

“The merchant marine is a civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Navy, but not a uniformed service, except in times of war when, in accordance with the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, mariners are considered military personnel. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law making them veterans of merchant mariners who serve in war. They were considered civilians during WWII and did not receive any of the benefits given to members of the U.S. armed forces.”

Janie Orman, National President of the SSFOA stated, “This is an extension of our mission to honor and remember the sacrifices made for this country.  The Merchant Marines have a proud history of sacrifice during war time and we are honored to be able to remember them.”
