Oct. 3, 2008 - PRLog -- Cary, NC – The first annual, Presbyterian Homes Inc. (PHI) Senior Olympic Games will officially get underway on Friday, October 17th at River Landing in Colfax, NC.  The PHI Senior Olympic Games’ participants consist of approximately 120 residents from the three PHI locations: River Landing in Colfax, Glenaire in Cary and Scotia Village in Laurinburg.  The Olympic events include golf, putting, cheerleading, billiards, table tennis, bocce ball and a one-mile walk relay.  In preparation for the games, Glenaire residents have implemented weekly practice sessions with fellow “Olympians” and coaches. The practice sessions began the week of September 1st and will continue until the PHI Senior Olympic Games begin on October 17th.

“All of the Olympic participants, their fans and supporters, and the staff and coaches from Glenaire are so excited for the first PHI Senior Olympic Games,” said Wendy Heinzmann, director of wellness programs. “It is such a wonderful opportunity for both the staff and residents of the three PHI locations. The Games provide a forum where everyone can get together and have a great time while promoting the overall health and wellness of PHI residents.”

Glenaire residents interested in participating signed up for one or two events of their choice.  Several members of the administrative staff at Glenaire are serving as coaches for the different events. Although the PHI Senior Olympic Games are not affiliated with the State Senior Olympic Games, participants are working diligently to perfect their skills in preparation for their events.

Glenaire resident and “Olympic” participant, Betty Holland, adds, “I thoroughly enjoy practicing for the PHI Senior Olympic Games because of the camaraderie I have established with the other residents. I love how the spirit of the game has embraced Glenaire.”
