The Berlin Wall – A monument to the Cold War

Nov. 3, 2008 - PRLog -- Berlin Wall.co.uk is a new information website about the historical Berlin Wall and its role in the Cold War. This website is for all those who are interested in German history and the division of Berlin into east and west from 1961 to 1990. With lots political and social information, Berlin Wall.co.uk allows visitors to identify with Germany and its charming capital. The website explains why the Berlin Wall was built, why a lot of East Berliners wanted to escape to the “other side” and how the Cold War ended with the Fall of the Berlin Wall 40 years after the establishment of the German Democratic Republic.

A Wall of 155 kilometres with metal fences, watch towers and bunkers divided Berlin and Germany into two parts. A lot of people lost their lives along the wall, most of them citizens of East Berlin who wanted to start a new and better life in West Berlin without Stasi control and the influence of political authority by the Soviet Union as the GDR’s “big brother”. “You are leaving the American sector”: as a constant reminder of this history this sign still stands at the legendary Checkpoint Charlie, which was the most famous border crossing point from east to west.

At Berlin Wall.co.uk, visitors can also find a historical map of Berlin showing the location of the former Berlin Wall. Many pictures show what still remains of the historical Berlin Wall located between Berlin Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.
