KWHL presents Winter Rocks at the Alaska State Fair on Saturday, February 7, 2009. This rock music festival features headliner Static Cycle, along with Dave Velasquez, Lavoy and The Hoons. This all-ages concert takes place in Raven Hall; doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $19.50 in advance or $25 at the door, and are available online at www.alaskastatefair.org (convenience fees apply), as well as at all Arby’s locations in Anchorage, Eagle River and Wasilla. Static Cycle, a young, Alaska rock band, is the culmination of five talented Alaska musicians who joined forces to create a unique energy with an innovative, gripping style. The group features vocalist Jared Navarre, who won the rock category in the 2004 Alaska Song of the Year contest; guitarist Josh Witham, formerly of Grain; drummer Dennis Smith, a popular and much sought-after statewide player; and the recent additions of accomplished bassist John Rheaume and rhythm guitarist Travis Hulse. Influenced by bands such as Breaking Benjamin, Foo Fighters, Chevelle and Linkin Park, Static Cycle combines edgy guitar licks, insistent rhythms and vicious vocals to create a truly compelling sound. That sound, combined with their commanding stage presence, makes them a favorite with audiences both within Alaska and Outside. Joining Static Cycle for the Winter Rocks festival are Dave Velasquez, Lavoy and The Hoons. Velasquez, whose style has been compared to Jason Mraz and John Mayer, brings a fresh, new sound to Alaska’s music scene. Quickly gaining a strong following, his music has already started to spread through the nation. Lavoy is a collaboration of indie songwriters hailing from Wasilla, Alaska. Sharing musical similarities with acts like “The Killers” and “TV on the Radio,” Lavoy continues to set the standard for Alaska indies, without abandoning their pop melodies. The Hoons’ aggressive, indie-rock style is something new for Anchorage – but new must be good, as the band’s fan base gets larger and more diverse with each passing year. Over the past three years, the group has opened for numerous national acts and performed on the Northwest leg of the Vans Warped Tour.
