Labeled “America’s painter” by many critics and art lovers alike, Andrew Wyeth is one of the most recognizable living artists because of the mythic stature he has achieved.  The realism in Wyeth’s paintings is so astoundingly accurate in detail that the textures and expressions of the models bring the viewer into his artwork with a sense that one could reach into the painting and feel his subjects. In his unsentimental portraits, Wyeth allows his models’, being his family and friends, true characters to come through.  He is skilled in such varied mediums as tempera, watercolor, dry brush, and more.  From his original works, he has produced multiple originals in order to share his art with a wider audience.  Wyeth is 91 years old and still creating in the same timeless style he began with over sixty years ago.

Andrew Wyeth, a painter of remarkable poetic masterpieces, best known for his landscapes of Maine and Pennsylvania and his beloved family and friends. His works always carry an intimate flavor and insightful realism regardless of the medium he chooses. Andrew Wyeth has achieved the highest accolades and acclaim in the United States and abroad.  Wyeth’s work is exhibited in every major museum in the world as well as being a part of an overwhelming amount of public and private collections. In the 60’s TIME Magazine published an article about the famous American artist when he was just 46 years old discussing his Christina’s World and its acquisition by MOMA in New York stating “Christina’s World, now 15 years old is one of the most durable and disquieting images of 20th century America. Against the wall of landscape that leads up to her house, the crippled body of an ageless woman seems trapped, imprisoned by the very emptiness of the earth. Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art, which hesitated before buying it in 1948 for $2,200 has repaid its investment 22 times over in the sale of reproductions.” In addition to the numerous articles, Wyeth’s contributions to the world of art have been recorded in every notable art history book created in his time.

Wyeth rejects the critics and historians classification of him as a Realist preferring instead to identify his art as Expressionistic. Realism is such a limiting term with regard to Wyeth and cannot contain what astonishing mastery we see through Andrew Wyeth’s art.  Wyeth magically imbues each landscape with a sense of history, nostalgia, and Americana.  His paintings are not just realistic; they are also full of darkness, emotion, light, and expression. Each Wyeth with a deeper meaning that is evident only upon further reflection of his artwork.

Since his first one-man show opened in New York in 1937 Wyeth’s paintings have displayed an age-old wisdom while his life speaks of free-spirited youth, even at the age of 91.  Wyeth has a track record like no other American artist, enjoying success and tremendous following since the age of twenty for seventy years to follow!
