Feb. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- Boston’s social media community will be joining hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world on Thursday, February 12, 2009, to host Twestival, a 24-hour global event to raise money and awareness for charity: water, a not for profit bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Twestivals are volunteer-run, fundraising meet-ups bringing communities together for a good cause, all driven by the popular micro-blogging service Twitter.com. Twestival was born out of the idea that if cities were able to collaborate on an international scale, but working from a local level, it could have a huge impact.

charity: water commented, “we’re thrilled that the Twitter community around the world is coming together to bring clean, safe drinking water to those in need by raising funds and awareness with an event on the scale of Twestival. This is an amazing opportunity to bring the cause and its message to a global community.”

Justin Whitaker, the event organizer for the Boston Twestival added: "Social media is changing the face of fundraising forever by allowing groups of people from around the world to join together in support of a cause they are passionate about to truly make an impact. Boston Twestival is a great opportunity for the local social media community to get together to support this great initiative.”

Amanda Rose, one of the organizers of Twestival, said “We're already blown away by the global reception and how keen people are to invest their time and energy for free to the Twestival and get behind charity: water.  Social TweetUps like this are a great way to meet the faces behind those avatars while raising a lot of money for a fantastic cause. Twestival is organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all event proceeds will go directly to support charity: water projects in developing countries, which will positively impact the lives of thousands.”
More than 175 cities around the world, including Boston, London, NYC, Paris, San Francisco, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Sydney and Beijing, are hosting their own Twestivals.

The Boston Twestival is sponsored by Amiando, TipJoy, Zendesk, SHIFT Communications and openSUSE, and will be held at The Lounge at OM, 92 Winthrop Street, Cambridge, MA, beginning at 6:30PM until close. Limited tickets for the event are available at http://boston.twestival.com/.
