March 9, 2009 - PRLog -- The VA budget request for 2010 contains a proposal that would bill veteran's private insurance for their service connected disability treatments.  This is morally and ethically repugnant.

By virtue of their service to the United States they are due health care, especially for service connected disabilities.  There must NOT be any confusion or negotiation on this.

It is extremely objectionable to attempt to bill the private insurance companies of those veterans who are able to obtain and afford private insurance.  Trying to penalize these veterans is offensive.

In the long run, this proposal would result in an increase of premiums to veterans from private insurance companies, a decrease in private insurance companies offering coverage for veterans as well as the very real possibility of employers shying away from hiring veterans because of the possibility of increased reliance on private insurance.  Then, in turn, this would transfer to increased difficulty in obtaining insurance, increased cost of insurance to civilians, as well.  To draw this comparison, one only needs to look at what has happened to fire insurance coverage in states such as California that routinely have catastrophic wildland fires.

If passed, this proposal will cost ALL of us dearly.
