Annual Friendship Day to Attract Neighbors and Friends

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Friendship Agape Church will be celebrating its 20th milestone this Sunday, June 14, 2009.

“God has a heart for people in the San Jose area,” explained Pastor Onephanh Vilay. “After overcoming significant challenges over the past two decades, today’s Friendship Agape Church is a living testimony of His abundant faithfulness.”

Friendship Day 2009 Celebration
Each year, the church welcomes neighbors, visitors as well as old friends to Friendship Day. With the entire program in both English and Mandarin Chinese, the church strives to meet the needs of multi-generational families and other members of the community. Starting at 11:10am, this year’s festivities include a children’s program, encouraging teaching, video presentation and special music by the adult choir. A potluck lunch follows in the fellowship hall. The church is located at 5150 Camden Avenue in San Jose. Freeways 85, 880, 17 and 87 are nearby.

Friendship Agape is one of the few churches in the San Jose area to offer a bilingual Chinese-English program each Sunday morning. Not only are the messages in both languages, worship songs are even shown on-screen using Chinese, Pinyin and English—a first for Silicon Valley. Pinyin is a phonetic representation of Chinese that allows non-Chinese speakers to sing and follow along in Mandarin.

The First Friendship Day
Originally founded by a small group of committed Chinese Christians, Friendship Agape was a missionary church that served the San Jose area. From its humble beginnings in Santa Clara, the church held its first Friendship Day in 1989 as a way of introducing neighbors, friends and co-workers to the church. As a result, numerous people, from many different professional and ethnic backgrounds, came to know Jesus and make Friendship Agape their spiritual birthplace.
