(IMI), was selected by Israel Defense Force (IDF) as the active protection system for the new Israeli Army NAMER Heavy APC
By: Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI) Personnel Carrier Deputy Chief of Staff of Israel Defense Forces (IDF), General Dan Harel, recently selected IMI's Iron Fist system as the Active Protection System (APS) for the IDF new "NAMER" (Hebrew for Tiger) heavy Armored Personnel Carrier. Iron Fist system, now in advanced development stage, has the unique capability of protecting Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), tanks and other platforms in the modern battlefield, from all types of anti-tank threats, including rocket ammunitions (ATRs) like RPG, anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) and tank rounds. Iron Fist system comprises of 3 main components: • Sensitive radar and IR sensors, capable of detecting and tracking threats fired towards the protected platform. • System main computer, that processes the sensors' data, identifies the threat and selects the proper mode of operation to neutralize it. • Two layers of counter-measures mounted on traversing launcher: 1. Soft-Kill: Electro-optical jamming device, which makes anti-tank missiles divert from their trajectory and miss their target. 2. Hard-Kill: Blast interceptors that explode in the proximity of the threat and neutralizing it. The process of neutralizing threats lasts a fraction of a second only, and is performed without any intervention by the APC or tank crew. Iron Fist system provides the crew with additional operational capabilities. The system addresses enemy launch-post location, enabling the crew to react immediately and effectively to enemy fire. The system's relatively light weight, dimensions and modular design enables to adapt it to a whole range of light and armored vehicles, like Hummers, light armor vehicles, armored personnel carriers, tanks and even ships. The Iron Fist system is modular designed in order to allow future integration of technological capabilities and systems, compatible with different war scenarios in the environment of the modern battlefield. # # # Israel Military Industries Ltd.
