Wednesday, July 1st, at 7:00 Dr. Larry Smith will present a program based on his highly acclaimed and award-winning book Darwin’s War, published in 2008. Dr. Smith’s father served in the 416th Bomber Group in 1944-45 in World War II in Europe. The 416th Bomb Group Light were assigned six A-20 Havocs and two B-25s. They flew 10,009 sorties in the war and boasted 33,479 combat hours. Dr. Smith records the entire history of the group from training to the end of the war. His book is not the typical unit history, however. Dr. Smith’s book weaves together the context of the war itself, from the political events of the 30s to the beliefs that motivated the ideological architects of the Third Reich. While his account of the lives of the bomber crews and their mechanics is personal and many-layered, he is able to penetrate the motivations and personalities of the men and their experience of war in the skies.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Local author Dr. Larry N. Smith has been named a finalist in the New Generation Indie Book Awards for 2009. Smith’s book, Darwin’s War, tells the story of the 416th Bomb Group during World War II. He has been nominated in two categories – History/Historical Non-Fiction and Best Cover Design.

Smith, of Gainesville, Florida, drew from the history of eugenics as well as personal, first-hand accounts to craft his historically based story.  His non-linear narrative details the complex interactions of pre-World War II economic, scientific, and diplomatic history and the consequences of these interactions, specifically on the lives of the 416th Bomb Group and the victims of the Holocaust. Smith’s father was a member of the bomb group that he details.

In Darwin’s War, Smith exposes the influence of early scientific and national survivalist writings on the first genetic and scientific organizations that arose from the Darwinian period. Following this theme, Smith shows how the scientific and social objectives of these organizations helped establish intolerant private and public policies and how those policies accelerated the onset of WWII.

Smith examines the infusion of private and public policies into national and strategic objectives before, during and after WWII through the eyes of the 416th Bomb Group. The author believes that the legacies of the policies of a science-based society live on today in many socio-political problems. Through those policies, national leaders galvanize their citizens into becoming Darwinian-Malthusian warriors, and wars are justified and waged not just against countries, but also against religions and other beliefs.

Writing to honor the men who fought and died to defeat eugenics, Smith hopes Darwin’s War will bring to light the true cost of scientific influence.
