By: Steve Newton, SSFOA Silver Star Banner Day is a day set aside every May 1st to remember and honor our wounded and ill. For Silver Star Banner Day of 2009, 1,137 cities and counties, 48 states, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, The Chickasaw Nation and Saipan, all issued proclamations in support. However the state of Missouri went one step further and has become the first state to make the day an actual law. “HB 678 -- SILVER STAR FAMILIES OF AMERICA DAY This bill designates May 1 of each year as "Silver Star Families of America Day" to honor the wounded soldiers of this state and the efforts of the Silver Star Families of America to honor the wounded members of the United States armed forces.” Steve Newton, founder of the SSFOA stated: “We are extremely proud that our home state has become the first to formalize May 1st. We fully expect other states and Congress to follow through. We must never forget the sacrifices made for this state and our Nation.” Representative Jay Wasson introduced the bill in the Missouri House and was taken up by Senator Goodman in the Senate. House vote was 158-0. Senate vote was 34-0.
