July 28, 2009 - PRLog -- Imagine a book that combines the concepts behind two of the most popular books of all-time: Catcher in the Rye and Atlas Shrugged. This book would be a coming-of-age story, a love story, and a story about the power of ideas – the big, overarching ideas about love and faith, truth and morality. You’ve found that book in The Mustard Seed.

The protagonist is Brian Raines - a smart, decent young man who has just graduated from college, and is having trouble surviving in the “Real World.” As he adjusts to his first job in a strange city, Brian struggles with his identity, and struggles even more to understand what it means to live a “good life.” Like that other embodiment of youthful angst, Holden Caulfield, Brian wins the hearts of readers with his refreshing honesty, deep insecurities, and durable optimism.

Early in the book, Brian meets two other recent college grads and strikes friendships with both of them. Those friendships set the tone for his spiritual journey. The first is with his new roommate, Mark, who is a kind-hearted, deeply-committed Christian. The second is with his new co-worker, Troy, who is a brilliant, charming nihilist. Each of them is eager to share their ideas with Brian, and Brian, for his part, is eager to learn from them.

Will Brian follow Mark? Or will he follow Troy? Or will he find happiness and romance with another character - a beautiful, extraordinary young woman named Heather – who has a unique perspective of her own? A series of shocking incidents makes Brian’s choice painfully difficult, but a final, climactic event makes the choice clear to all.

Overall, The Mustard Seed is a gripping, emotionally-riveting novel that will find a wide audience among young people, spiritual seekers, and intellectuals.

Todd White (a pseudonym) is a 29-year old speechwriter living in Arlington, Virginia. While his book is fictional, it is based on his authentic spiritual and intellectual journey.
