By: Monterey Mushrooms Trish Moratto, (916) 960-2908 tmoratto@augustineideas.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 20, 2009 Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Overweight Teens Vitamin D Enriched Foods Help Teens Stay Healthy Monterey, CA - New research shows Vitamin D deficiencies are damaging for growing bones and can contribute to overweight adolescents. In a study published by Medical College of Georgia it was reported that more than 650 teens age 14 to 19 that had higher Vitamin D intakes also had lower overall body fat and lower amounts of fat in the abdomen (visceral fat) . The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends adolescents get at least 400 units of Vitamin D per day — either from diet or sun exposure. In an additional study , published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, females aged 16 to 22, with lower levels of Vitamin D were associated with higher levels of body fat. With Vitamin D levels falling in the general population due to sedentary lifestyles and skin smart behaviors due to fears of skin cancer, alternate sources of Vitamin D are necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Monterey Mushroom’s 100 percent Vitamin D Enriched Mushrooms are the first packaged fresh mushroom to provide at least 100 percent of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin D in a single, three-ounce serving (about four or five mushrooms) through a natural sun-ripening process. The process was developed through a collaborative research program with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) by exposing the mushrooms to ultra violet light, thus increasing the stable level of Vitamin D to a minimum of 100 percent of the level recommended by the FDA. “The arrival of mushrooms as a low calorie and natural option for Vitamin D supplementation heralds a giant step in the prevention of osteoporosis and other Vitamin D related conditions,” Poor diets, lactose intolerance and a lack of outdoor exercise contribute to the low levels of vitamin D found in teens today. Monterey Mushrooms 100 percent Enriched Vitamin D mushrooms increased Vitamin D level does not include additives, supplements, or chemicals and the Vitamin D is stable — maintaining its nutritional value even after cooking or freezing. Mushrooms are the only fruit or vegetable that naturally contains Vitamin D which is obtained through sun exposure the same way humans naturally produce the nutrient.
