“Panhandling for Polio” Donations Expected to Triple

For the second time, Washington County Rotaract “panhandled” for donations in the Portland and Vancouver area. Donations tripled the amount received at the first Panhandling for Polio. The club is now preparing for World Panhandling Day in 2010.

Oct. 26, 2009 - PRLog -- Last Saturday, Washington County Rotaract “panhandled” for donations at major freeway exit ramps in the Portland Area. Panhandling for Polio raises funds as part of Rotary’s Polio Plus Challenge to complete the long project of eradicating polio from the world.

Over $900 was received in the four hours of panhandling in Beaverton, Tualatin, Vancouver. Hundreds of dollars are still pouring in from online donations. At this rate, the club expects to triple the donations received from the first Panhandling for Polio in June 2009.

“We’re not there yet, but it’s looking good,” says Club Treasurer Kindra Milliman. “Hopefully people that couldn’t donate Saturday will keep donating online.”

With the near completion of this installment of the fundraiser, the club is now organizing World Panhandling Day. Organized by Washington County Rotaract, over thirty Rotary and Rotaract Clubs from at least 16 different countries will panhandle to raise money and awareness of Rotary’s Polio Plus Project.

“Something important we learned is that so many people are unaware of the polio situation in world,” says club member Genevieve Beatty-Tinsay. “Not only do we raise money, but we are raising awareness of a problem many people don’t know still exists.”  Washington County Rotaract hopes that through Panhandling for Polio, awareness is raised in addition to the much needed funds to finish the job of eradicating polio.
