Follow on Google News | Orem Chiropractor Explains Chronic PainBrain lateralization leads to and or contributes to a multitude of chronic health conditions. Brain lateralization is a phenomenon where one side of the brain is under performing.
By: www.AskDrNed.com Think of each side of the brain as a light bulb in a lamp. A dimmer switch that you can progressively brighten or dim controls each bulb. Brain lateralization is when one bulb or one side of the brain is dimmed or turned down. So again imagine a lamp with one side noticeably dimmer than the other. This is brain lateralization. Let’s apply this to pain. I should first point out that every pain nerve in the body is always on. If they weren’t on they would die. The reason we don’t perceive these is because our brain inhibits their input. It’s like this - as you are reading this you are probably sitting down and until I mention it you are unaware of your bottom against the chair you are sitting on. Why? Because your brain is inhibiting that information. The brain says I don’t need that. This is what normally happens to all of the pain nerves in our bodies. They get inhibited. There is a constant tug of war between inhibition and pain. Whether you increase pain input or you decrease the inhibition and the result is the same - pain. Think of it like this way. We’ve got a tug of war going on between pain & inhibition. You can give more guys to the pain side or you can take away guys from the inhibition side. Either way the pain side wins. Well we all know a 1000 ways to increase pain input. The part of the brain that inhibits this pain is called the periaqueductal gray matter. When you have brain lateralization it causes the periaqueductal gray matter or PAG to be turned down. Therefore you feel more pain or feel pain with more intensity. My next few entries will continue on this topic to help you understand how brain lateralization occurs, how it leads to health problems, and how brain based therapy can correct it and your health problems.
