Feb. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is pleased to announce the names of five members who received the Microsoft Award, a $2,000 scholarship.

Congratulations to:

   * Alex Kaplan, University of California, Berkeley
   * Daniel DeMaiolo, Youngstown State University
   * Kyle Hutchins, Miami University
   * Nika Tamashiro, Univesity of Rochester
   * Michele Fried, University of Maryland

NSCS has partnered with Microsoft to bring members more discounts and opportunities. Through this partnership, NSCS is able to award these five scholarships to members who have exemplified leadership and excellence through their academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and service.

The application period for the Microsoft Award was September 10, 2009 to October 31, 2009. Each applicant was required to answer two essay questions. The essays were then reviewed by Microsoft. The five recipients were chosen based on best overall answers to the essay questions.

“We are excited about working with NSCS and supporting the futures of students through scholarships and other activities,” said Amy Strande, director for student audience marketing at Microsoft. “The essays written by the NSCS members were thoughtful and impressive. With the vision that they articulated, it’s clear that the next generation will be pushing technology to new heights in terms of what it can do to improve the world in which these students live.”

The exceptional essays also attracted the attention of NSCS Executive Director and Founder Stephen E. Loflin.

“We’re pleased to partner with Microsoft to recognize these students for their outstanding leadership and academic achievements,” said Stephen E. Loflin, NSCS Executive Director and Founder. “We hope to work with our partner Microsoft again to bring our members even more scholarships and opportunities in the future.”
