D.C. Design Firm Launches Ruka Press

Feb. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- Sensical Design & Communication, based in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., has announced the launch of Ruka Press, an independent publisher of beautifully designed nonfiction books that explain the world intelligently. The new company will focus on publishing books with a strong information-design component for a general audience.

Ruka Press will initially rely on print-on-demand publishing, online distribution, and ebook sales in order to publish cost effectively. Ruka Press will use social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook to connect to potential authors and readers.

Ruka Press is currently negotiating with its first authors and will announce its first title in the near future. Authors, agents, and interested members of the public can visit the Ruka Press website (www.rukapress.com) to learn how to submit a proposal.

Over the past six years, Sensical Design has specialized in book and publication design for non-profits and financial-services companies. The company has designed numerous publications, and successfully steered its clients through the publishing and book production process.

Sensical Design’s founder and lead designer, Daniel Kohan, decided to leverage this publishing experience to produce books that he will both edit and design. Elizabeth Cogan, who holds a Master’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, will help with selecting properties, editing, and promotion.

“We love books, and everything related to the publishing process,” said Daniel Kohan. “Many small presses and self-publishers struggle because they cut corners on presentation: the editing, copyediting, and design are amateurish and don’t hold up to the work of the ‘big six’ publishers. We’ve demonstrated over the years that we have the expertise to put out a top-notch product. And with the advances in technology that have come to book printing and distribution, we can do that extremely cost effectively.”
