March 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Today, Illinois State Senate candidate Adam Robinson (R-7th) commented on Governor Pat Quinn's budget proposal.

“This morning, Governor Quinn proposed a budget that could quite possibly be the most irresponsible budget ever submitted to the Illinois General Assembly.

On a projected revenue base of $27.4 billion, Governor Quinn is proposing to spend $32.1 billion – nearly $5 billion more than he expects to be available.  As a matter of fact, nearly one fifth of General Funds spending doesn’t have a single penny of revenue to back it up.

Here in the 7th District, our residents are doing everything they can to weather this ecomonic downturn.  For my family, and for my neighbors’ families, that means cutting back.  That means making tough but responsible choices about spending money, and that means doing more with less.  In our neck of the woods, people get it.

Unfortunately, our Governor most definitely does not “get it.”  Instead of leading our state towards stronger financial footing, he’s chosen to march us in the direction of more borrowing, higher taxes, and fewer jobs.  Quinn’s tax proposal fails to take the necessary steps that everyone agrees need to be taken – immediately – to save our state from being the next California.  Furthermore, the higher taxes that Quinn will ultimately call for will only make things worse by exacerbating the anti-jobs environment in our state.

Our community recognizes Illinois’ financial crisis, but they also recognize that the way to fix it is NOT with more irresponsible borrowing and job-killing taxes.  I cannot support a budget that demands higher taxes from our citizens without first forcing the state government to do everything it can to cut spending to a level that reflects reality.

This isn’t about political ideology – it’s about finding good ideas.  And no matter what side of the political spectrum you typically support, this crisis requires us to come together and find common ground.  Unfortunately, Governor Quinn’s budget puts the political status quo before the well-being of our residents.  That’s not leadership.

People are sick and tired of getting hammered by a state government that can’t even manage its own checkbook.  It’s time for elected leaders to show political courage and make decisions that serve the people’s interests rather than their own.  I call on Governor Quinn to rethink his approach and to put people first.”
