Belmont, NH:  A dryer fire left 10 people, including 6 children, homeless.  The malfunctioning dryer, in the basement of an apartment building, set fire to nearby debris according to fire officials.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 15,000 dryer fires are reported annually.  Most of them are caused by failure to clean dryer vent systems.  Other causes include improper dryer vent installation or flammable items being stored near the dryer.  “Even if the debris is not the direct cause of the fire, it will add fuel to the flames, allowing the fire to spread more rapidly and cause more damage,” said Dickson.

Though the laundry room is the most likely place to store various items like cleaning supplies, grocery bags, paint, and boxes of odds and ends, it can also be very dangerous.  Webb Dickson advises his customers to be very careful what they store in the laundry room.  Some things are better stored in the garage, shed, attic or basement.  

Webb Dickson’s advice to landlords and property managers is to visit their units periodically to be sure there are no fire hazards.  “Dryer vent cleaning is recommended at least once a year for single-family residents,” said Dickson.  “When multiple families are sharing the same laundry facilities, then dryer vent cleaning needs to be done more often.”
