Apple registered its namesake, the 64th domain on February 19, 1987.  Microsoft waited until 1991 to buy theirs.

Symbiotics was conceived at the MIT Artificial Intellligence lab, the renown academic incubator.  When Symbionics took the first step, there was barely an internet.  it was years before the world wide web and graphical web browsers.  In 1997, the amount of .com domain names registered topped one million.
