April 9, 2010 - PRLog -- A new diagnostic training system has been developed by the country’s leading automotive academy that tests the skill and knowledge of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers working on MAN British Army vehicles.

Developed by S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol, the fault insertion system followed a request from MAN Military Trucks - which provides the British Army with high tech operational vehicles - for a system that would apply specifically to its military vehicles.

Adapting its Real Vehicle Fault Insertion system, the academy now uses the technology, applying it to the army’s highly-sophisticated military vehicles.

It works where by the system links a truck to a special fault insertion ‘black box’ which in turn is connected to a computer. The technician being tested will then log into a fault insertion programme that places one of 24 faults into the MAN Army vehicle.

They then have to diagnose and fix the problem presented to them.

Jon Winter, chief executive at S&B Automotive Academy said: “Vehicles and especially the MAN Army trucks are becoming increasingly technical and require a high level of skill to diagnose and fix. Army technicians therefore have to rapidly develop their electronic systems knowledge and diagnostic skills.

“This ground breaking new system has a number of benefits. Firstly it’s non evasive so doesn’t impact on the truck’s electrical system. They can also be used remotely meaning the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers can be tested anywhere so they don’t have to travel to specialist centres to undergo their training.

“S&B Automotive Academy is at the forefront of developing innovative new techniques that, in this instance, tests the skills of the engineers. By identifying any gaps in their skills means their training can be tailored accordingly so that the Army vehicles are kept in top running order.”
