The tour will be hosted by historian Lawrence P. Rockwood.
April 26, 2010- Beginning May 2, 2010 at 1:00pm, the NYC Local of the Socialist Party USA will sponsor a weekly walking tour of the radical history of the Lower East Side and Greenwich Village. The tour will be hosted by historian Lawrence P. Rockwood and will guide participants through the heyday of American radicalism. The tour will include stories of the lives and love affairs of New York City’s most famous radicals. The tour will include stops at the Village Voice, Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, and Stonewall Inn. The tour will also bring to life such figures as Emma Goldman, Eugene O’Neil and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. Rockwood’ “The tour reveals a secret history of NYC.” says Rockwood “Where today we see Starbucks and The Gap, there once were the radical newspapers, workers’organizations and artists who laid the foundations of the counter-cultural vibe we know today.” The tour will meet every Sunday at 1:00 pm beginning May 2nd at the Peace Pentagon located at the North East corner of Bleecker St. and Lafayette St. It will last approximately 2 hours and cover approximately 4 miles.
