By: South Nassau Communities Hospital A specialist in surgical oncology, including head and neck surgery, Dr. Reid helped South Nassau’s Cancer Program earn the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award. South Nassau is one of just five hospitals in New York from among only 83 in the United States to receive the prestigious award. “The award is a testament to our commitment to provide a cancer care program that continues to grow and expand rapidly to meet the needs of the communities we serve,” said Dr. Reid. “We feature an experienced team of oncologists and staff and use leading-edge medical and cancer treatment technologies.” Dr. Reid completed a Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In addition to the Fellowship training, Dr. Reid conducted basic science research on the role of herpes simplex virus on the treatment of head and neck cancers and was a contributing author of the renowned clinical textbook, Complications of Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Reid graduated with honors from City College of New York with a degree in Biochemistry and was a recipient of the prestigious Jonas Salk Scholarship. He completed his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati and his internship and residency at Maimonidies Medical Center in Brooklyn. While at Maimonidies, he received the Bertram Cohn Outstanding Resident Award in 2003 and the Chief Resident of the Year Award in 2005. Dr. Reid is active in research, lecturing and publishing papers on cancer and surgery. The author and co-author of numerous papers and studies, he has been published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, International Journal of Cancer, Cancer Research and the Journal of Cellular Immunology. He has also presented abstracts and studies at prestigious national and international conferences including the American College of Surgeons, International Conference of the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) South Nassau’s surgical oncology program specializes in head, neck, breast and chest tumors; tumors of the female reproductive system; soft tissue sarcoma and melanoma; upper gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures; tracheal, esophageal and liver surgeries; and radio frequency ablation for liver tumors. The program’s surgical oncologists use advanced minimally invasive techniques whenever possible that eliminate the need for large incisions, reduce blood loss during surgery, and lessen the intensity of post-operative pain. They work with medical oncologists and radiation oncologists in comprehensive, multidisciplinary teams to provide evaluation and therapy for a wide range of cancers, both common and rare.
