June 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Aplicom is one of the first manufacturers to launch a vehicle telematics unit combining GPS and GLONASS positioning systems. A product, such as the launched A5 GLX, which uses both positioning systems, always has more satellites available to it than a device only connecting to either positioning system. Four or more satellites are needed to gain 3D location information, so the more satellites there are to connect to, the quicker and more reliable the connection is. Enabling positioning immediately in mission critical operations, A5 GLX supports also A-GNSS. This allows the first fix within seconds from the start-up.

The A5 GLX unit is designed for professional applications where driver information and vehicle data is utilized. The unit combines advanced GPS/GLONASS tracking with complete telematics functionality. It can be connected to FMS CAN to gain valuable vehicle data and is also compatible with Garmin navigators for fleet management. With A5 GLX driver identification tools are available as well as accurate mileage information. The provided voice call interface offers an effective and safe way of communication between the office and the driver.

A5 GLX has a rugged design suitable for even the most demanding and difficult environments. It is targeted especially for public safety solutions, value transportation services and military applications. The GPRS communication can be extended with CDMA, Iridium or long range Bluetooth networks to provide a redundant communication solution.

As GLONASS now have reached global coverage with their satellites, a tracking product supporting both GPS and GLONASS positioning solutions allows a remarkably higher level of reliability. This opens new markets for telematics applications and strongly influences the penetration rate of telematics, especially in those countries and segments, where relying on only one positioning solution is a security risk.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based, global navigation satellite system maintained by the United States government. GLONASS (GLObal NAvigation Satellite System) is a similar system operated by the Russian Space Forces for the Russian government.
