June 11, 2010 - PRLog -- Dadonghai Beach, the famous coastal resort of Sanya in Hainan Province, was invaded by a mass of green algae in the past few days. It was concerned that the seaweed could cause damage to tourists as it spreads over wide areas of the beach. “It is a marine ecological phenomenon that will not bring about negative impact on mankind or ocean environment.” experts from Sanya Environmental Monitoring Station said in an interview yesterday.

June 8th was World Ocean Day. Reporters found that green algae blooms at Dadonghai Beach (http://www.chinatouronline.com/china-travel/sanya/sanya-attractions/Dadonghai-Beach_219.html) appeared as thick mats. A mass of algae rose to the water surface so that the sea near the beach turned green. It just looked like pea soup. When interviewed by reporters, none of the tourists were willing to swim in the sea. A few of them in their swimsuits, were standing on the sand and watching the workers clean the algae. The workers said that the beach had been covered by green algae for some time and they have to remove two truckloads of the algae everyday.

Green algae blooms mostly occur in the hot summer months because the sunny weather could help the algae to grow. An expert at Sanya (http://www.chinatouronline.com/china-travel/sanya.html) Environmental Monitoring Station, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that in order to find the reasons of this phenomenon, local administrations had conducted an investigation into the problem in 2004. He also indicated that the green algae would disappear with the change of weather, temperature, and living conditions of the seaweed.

A number of methods can be used in the prevention and control of green algae blooms. These include artificial destratification, filtration, algicides, coagulation and ferric iron salts or organic polymers. But the use of algicides is not recommended by the government and will only be used in emergency cases. At present, the most reliable way to remove the green algae is using activated carbon filtration.

It is worth mentioning that measures to improve catchment management will have long term benefits to the environment.
