FUE-BHT-SFET to Repair NW6 Hair Loss Case by Dr. Umar

June 17, 2010 - PRLog -- The patient presented in this photo has a hair loss level of NW6 that is destined to become NW7 level, and he had 1800 grafts transplanted in an inappropriate method using the strip method. Thus, the patient was left with his head still bald, and in addition to this problem he was now also left with a strip scar and odd hair placement. For example, he had 1800 grafts placed in the middle of a large bald area, which looked very unnatural. Unfortunately, the patient does not have enough head donor supply to pursue further transplants to repair the acquired odd look from the strip surgery. Therefore he went to Dr. Umar with the optimistic views of using Body Hair Transplantation (BHT) for repair.

Dr. Umar used 12,000 hairs from the head, beard, chest and stomach hair to cover the entire NW6 area in order to camouflage and remove the oddly placed grafts. Only about 2,000 grafts of the 12,000 hairs were extracted from the head. Because the patient is destined for NW7, Dr. Umar avoided the nape hair. The patient anticipated adding even more hair in the future, but at this stage he is already happy with the repair.

Without the option of using non head hair, any patients with this degree of baldness should never have been able to have a hair transplant due to the lack of donor hairs. Undergoing further transplants under this state creates the risk of a dilemma such as the one this patient was faced with before seeing Dr. Umar. He was compelled to undergo more surgery in which very high numbers of grafts are used to remove the abnormal appearance created by the first strip surgery. Of course, there is also the option of wearing a hair piece which many patients do not want to do. Surgery on severely bald individuals should be avoided by clinics and doctors that are not experienced in performing non head hair transplantation.

In addition, the use of nape hair for this kind of hair level patient is not advised. Patients that are destined for NW 7 should not have nape hair transplanted. If in doubt, the future hair loss pattern can be better elucidated after shaving the donor area. Upon doing so, the future pattern of hair loss becomes evident, as can be seen in the shaved picture of this patient. The shaved donor area reveals a distinct band (wreath) of dense hair corresponding to the safe zone, which is what the donor might be reduced to in the future. For this patient, the plan for the future would be to include the reconstruction/ reconstitution of the nape and periaural areas.
