June 25, 2010 - PRLog -- Palmyra Palm Fruit (Borassus flabellifer) is also known as Fan palm, Brab tree, Todd palm, and Tala palm. In Hindi and Bengali, it is called Tal, Talgach and Tarkajhar. It is known as Pannei in Tamil language. This is found in the drier areas of Sri Lanka, Burma and also in most of the tropical countries. Though India is not the native of this tree, it is now expansively cultivated here.

The fruits are eaten roasted or raw, and the young jellylike seeds are eaten. A sugary sap, called Toddy, can be obtained from the young inflorescene, either male or female ones. The toddy is fermented to make a beverage called arrack, or it is concentrated to a crude sugar called jaggery/palm sugar.
