During a recent interview, Gerry Rhen explained how a dryer fire is caused.  “When dryer ducts are clogged with lint, air flow is restricted,” said Rhen.  “The dryer cannot expel heat and moisture through a clogged dryer vent.  Eventually, the dryer overheats or throws a spark into the ducts where the flammable lint is waiting to ignite.”

•   Check the lint screen between loads and have dryer vent cleaning done periodically

•   Proper dryer vent installation that meets current city, state and manufacturer’s codes.

•   Plastic, vinyl or flexible foil ducts should be replaced with solid metal ducts

•   Avoid putting rags soaked with flammable substances into the dryer, even if they have been washed, because some residue can remain and ignite.

•   Do not leave the house or go to sleep when the dryer is running.
