Sunbury Press to Produce "REAL Life Drawing: My Eye on Washington, DC" book by Mary Gallagher Stout

Inspired and pragmatic are the adjectives that best describe this series.  It began with The Legend of the Rent  (the title of the  blurb on my blog that admitted to the world that artists have to address real world concerns like  paying the rent)  So I  started to reflect on my work:

Things I like:
I am mad about life drawing.  There is nothing like working with live models.  Depicting the human figure in quick studies and gesture is very exciting.   The downside is that it typically occurs in a studio and being stuck in a studio all day is the pits.

How I make paintings/drawings:
The material(s) that I create works on have an intimate connection with the piece.  The material is the first layer, the topic sentence, that directs the viewer into the work.  The second layer  is defined by color.  Then follows the subject depicted, the expressive lines, and finally the title.  This has become my system for creation.    Today my paintings are full of confident colors, intrepid strokes, and personal narratives.  Art is my vocation.  God has blessed me with this gift of seeing and I believe it is my duty to share it with the world.  I use art as vehicle for social commentary and contemplation.   I am recording and reporting what is happening right now.  So that in 500 years when people look back at this time in history they will be able to see who were.  What things frightened us?  What made us laugh?  What our families looked like? …and so on.  

So:
I am painting on the Washington Post because it is THE PAPER that residents of the DC Metro Area get their news.  I am a visual reporter recording REAL life in the District on the widest reaching periodical in the area.  I am a primary source for information and so I have gessoed the Washington Post and spattered it with primary colors to denote this TRUTH.  Each week I set up my easel and draw REAL life.  I thought it would be a great way to sell original art at a small price point so I could pay my rent.
