Parents Teaching Children with Cerebral Palsy Find New Hope with San Diego Anat Baniel Practitioner

Scientists discovered that almost always, regardless of the specific special needs diagnosis, a child’s brain is available for potent learning. San Diego Anat Baniel Practitioner Margie Murnan teaches parents how to benefit from this discovery.

Aug. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Parents, grandparents, and the caregivers of Special Needs children have different concerns, but mostly that the child is not doing the things they believe they should be doing by a certain age.

When a child has Special Needs everyone’s goal is to help the child gain full functioning movement, thought, perception and feeling. The question is: how?

San Diego parents of special needs children have a new resource in town for understanding how to teach and support children with cerebral palsy and other special needs.

Her name is Margie Murnan and she’s the areas first licensed Anat Baniel Practitioner. The Anat Baniel Method for Children (ABM) is scientifically based. The practitioner of this method uses gentle, innovative techniques to help the brain of the brain injured child form new neural connections and patterns that take the child beyond their current limitations.

While it is a process, the changes begin happening right away and are often quite dramatic.

Margie explains: “Through ABM lessons, your child is engaged in a gentle yet powerful ways of learning primarily through movement, enhanced awareness and non-verbal kinesthetic experiences. This process provides the brain with the conditions and information it needs in order to begin learning.

Your child’s brain will form new neural patterns that were missing due to illness or injury. Once enough of these missing elements are in place, your child will spontaneously begin doing what he couldn’t do before.

Children can very quickly transform into effective learners and experience important changes in their ability to move, perceive, understand, initiate, think, relate to their surroundings, and make sense of what is happening to them.”

Dr. Christopher Ryan, M.D. from the Denver Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, talked about the ABM method for working with special needs children: “As much as I pour over medical science and research, and as much time as I spend acid testing Anat’s statements in my naturally skeptical mind, I have yet to find logical fault or lack of scientific foundation…. Anat Baniel’s Method is effective where other treatments have not been, and it is at times almost miraculously effective where medical science has either given up, or where, out of desperation, painful and often counterproductive measures have sadly become the standard of care.”

With the ABM the focus is very different. Rather than try to fix the problem directly by focusing on the limitations, the focus is shifted to where the solutions actually lie – with the brain.

The ABM focuses on helping the brain of the brain injured child do its job better. It helps the brain right itself and regain its ability to powerfully and consistently create new neural patterns that bring about successful solutions. We apply gentle techniques that directly communicate with the nervous system of the child through, primarily, movement, enhanced awareness and non-verbal kinesthetic experiences.

With the ABM, the brain of the child with cerebral palsy or any other brain injury regains its ability to function in a healthy way. That is when the brain damaged child can begin doing what healthy children do.

Margie continues “Some of my most rewarding work is in the private movement sessions.

I have seen children learn to do things the parents were told they would never be able to do.   I have a strong belief in seeing into the possibilities for these children after overcoming my own disability with this method.

Children are so curious and interested in what I teach them so they learn very quickly.
I have seen some incredible outcomes that baffle the medical community.

The most common things I hear from parents is how their child seems so much more relaxed, they can't believe how gentle this method is, and the changes occur so quickly as compared to the other therapies they have tried in the past.”

Murnan truly is a trailblazer in our San Diego County area. As the Anat Baniel approach to learning structural movement is becoming nationally known, Murnan is the first practitioner here in the area.

She is achieving such great results with her students, that word is getting out. People are driving in from Corona, down from LA, and even has out of town clients that plan extended stays so they can receive movement lessons in succession from her.  They take this knowledge back to their home, practice it daily and are able to see accumulative relief in their pain.

Children with the following conditions have benefited from the method:

Cerebral Palsy, Brain damage infant and brain injured child (including stroke)
Child autism, autism spectrum disorders, Pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger's Disorder
Sensory Integration dysfunction,
Brachial Plexus injury, torticollis, and other birth injuries, birth defects,
Scoliosis
Genetic disorders such as Fragile X, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and Down's Syndrome
ADD and learning disabilities
Feeding disorders, bowel and bladder accidents and undiagnosed conditions
