By: Lynthomas Women who wear bras are publicly whipped and humiliated by Somalia’s hardline Islamist insurgent group, al Shabaab. All women ‘who are perceived to have firm busts’ are gathered up by gunmen in Mogadishu. They are then whipped by masked men, as a punishment, for what Islamist leaders deem as deception. Subsequent to the whippings, the women are forced to remove their bras and shake their breasts. “Al Shabaab forced us to wear their type of veil and now they order us to shake our breasts,” a resident of Halima groaned. Her daughters had been whipped for wearing bras. “They first banned the former veil and introduced a hard fabric which stands stiffly on women’s chests. They are now saying that breasts should be firm naturally, or just flat”. Women in Afghanistan were forced to wear the burqa in public, because, according to a Taliban spokesman, "The face- of a woman is a source of corruption" for men not related to them. According to Islamic law, women in Malaysia are caned and given a prison sentence for pre-marital sex. One of the punished women married her boyfriend, who was also caned and sentenced over the offense. “I know I have sinned, and I have to be punished. Strangely however, I felt that the caning was not a form of punishment but was an opportunity for me to repent and return to the right path,” said the woman, who is serving a six-month prison sentence. However, some men are been forced, by modern communications, to face justice for abusing their women. In India, a seventeen year-old Indian tribal girl was recorded on mobile phone videos, as she was forced to walk naked for about 8 km. She was mauled by hundreds of jeering men. This has led to the arrest of five men. Police felt obliged to take action after being made aware of the video being sent around in a MMS clip, titled "Adibasi girl". The girl’s misdemeanor was that she had fallen in love with a boy from another community. In several Islamic countries there is an increasing movement of women beginning to stand up for their rights. “Sometimes, due to upbringing,” We refuse to tolerate any discrimination against women based on Islam and diffuse concepts such as ‘culture’” For more information about "Bra Wearing Women Publicly Humiliated", visit website http://www.tropicpost.com/ Dr Wendy Stenberg-Tendys and her husband are CEO's of YouMe Support Foundation (http://youmesupport.org) provide high school education grants for children who are without hope.
