If you are lacking in sleep it can negatively impact many areas of your life and the truth is that many of us aren’t getting enough.

Models Direct thought we would share our top five tips to help you get a good nights rest.


Routine. Keeping a regular routine of going to bed and getting up at the same time of day is very important. Most people find that their body will automatically adjust to a routine, so sometimes a couple of late nights can result in being unable to settle on the third. Try as hard as you can to keep your sleep time regular. If you have a late night it may just pay to get up early the next day anyway, and avoid the temptation of a lay-in to ensure that you are tired at a reasonable time that evening, otherwise bad habits can creep in!

Restful environment. A top tip on creating a good sleep environment is to take that television out of your bedroom. Bedrooms should be for sleeping so avoid anything stimulating in this part of your home. Decorate with soothing colours, ensure that it is neither too hot or too cold with good air circulation and invest in some calming lighting. Making your bedroom a sanctuary for sleeping will really help you to relax in there so it may well be worth investing some extra cash in it. Is your mattress comfortable? If not this could be causing you discomfort and may also lead to back problems. If you can, get a new mattress or try a mattress topper as a less expensive alternative.

Exercise. Even though you may find yourself tired more often than you’d like - and short of time, do try to include exercise in your daily routine. Physical exercise will improve your general health and your chances of achieving a great nights sleep. If you feel you don’t have time for the gym or a specific fitness pursuit try including simple activities in your day, like walking or biking short distances rather than taking the car, or using the stairs instead of the lift.

Relaxation. It is hard for anyone to wind down from a stressful or busy day and drop straight off to sleep. Yoga is particularly helpful with this (http://www.prlog.org/10646213-models-direct-ten-reasons-t...) or you could simply try taking a bath before you go to bed or reading a good book for half an hour before bedtime.

Diet. This may seem obvious but avoid caffeine if you have problems sleeping.The effects can last up to 24 hours and cutting it out may well make the difference that you’ve been searching for! Try a milky drink at bedtime and avoid sugary snacks after 6pm.
