By: Dr. Kumar Pati, CEO Best Nutrition Products Modern medicine considers the immune system almost as an afterthought, and would rather consider battle germs and cancer cells directly — with disinfectant chemicals, antibiotic and chemotheraphy drugs, surgery, radiation, intensive hospital care etc. This approach has its uses, but it frequently leaves people as PATIENTS (patient= one who is acted upon), at the mercy of the war between invading germs and the medical establishment. Modern immunonutritional research provides a more optimistic and empowering picture of the active role a person and his/her immune system can play in the eternal war against germs. This research has established the amazing effectiveness of Immunostimulant Nutrients to strengthen our genetically endowed immune system. The Immune System The immune system is our body’s police and armed forces. It cleans up damaged cell parts, cancerous cells, and toxic chemicals. The immune system also monitors the body for foreign microbial invaders — viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites etc. and proceeds to destroy any such invaders with many different weapons. Having briefly outlined some major aspects of the immune system, we can now focus on the powers of the immunostimulant nutrients. Beta-carotene is a nontoxic plant source precursor of vitamin A which the body can convert to real Vitamin A as needed. Vitamin A opposes the thymus-and-lymph- Beta-carotene and Vitamin A oppose cancer induction by carcinogens. Vitamin A enhances macrophage activity. Vitamin A increase nonspecific resistance to infection even in nondeficient animals given excess A. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant which prevents fat and cell- membrane rancidity. Excess E increases antibody response to germs to two to three times the norm, and there is no antibody response at all in seriously E-deficient animals. E increases T-helper cell activity. Vitamin E is involved in T-lymphocytes stimulation of B-cells to make antibodies. Experimental animals given excess E increase their resistance to infection and exhibit a four-fold increase in survival rate. Vitamin C (ascorbate) is concentrated by white blood cells to levels 50 to 100 times the blood levels of C. High-dose vitamin C increases interferon production, a key biochemical the body uses to fight viruses and cancer. Ascorbate reduces post-blood transfusion hepatitis. Vitamin C is a potent stimulator of T-effector cell activity, and raises the “phagocytic index” (how many germs a phagocyte can ingest and kill before dying of indigestion in the line of duty). C works inside white cell to infection sites and makes bacteria and viruses more susceptible to phagocytic attack.” Vitamin C is an antioxidant which helps T-effector cells produce the toxic free radial chemicals they use to kill germs, and helps these same cells avoid damage from the “back flow” of the very free radicals they use to kill germs. Vitamin B-6 is essential in converting GLA into the key immunoregulatory prostaglandin PGE-1. B-6 is critical for antibody formation. Combined B-6 and pantothenic acid (B-5) deficiency causes complete loss of antibody response. B-6 increases thymus gland hormone functions. B-6 and B-5 deficiency causes severe thymus / lymphoid atrophy. B-6 deficiency also reduces phagocytic activity. Folic acid (folate) deficiency seriously impairs antibody production. Folate deficiency impairs lymphocyte function in humans. Gross and Newberne claim that folate deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in our industrialized world, and thus “large segments of the population may have lowered resistance to certain viral, fungal, parasitic, and bacterial infections.” Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) is the precursor of PGE-1, a key regulator of T-lymphocyte function. GLA can in theory be made from linoleic acid, common in vegetable oils. In practice, however, B-6, B-3, C, zinc, magnesium and A deficiencies may block this conversion, as can excess trans-fatty acids (from hydrogenated vegetable oils and margarine), high fat diet, many viruses, diabetes, radiation, aging excess and candida. Evening Primrose oil, black currant seed oil, and borage oil are the main available sources of pre-formed GLA. Magnesium is required for activation of the alternative pathway of the complement system (blood proteins that help destroy germs). Magnesium is necessary for phagocytes to ingest germs. Thymus atrophy may occur with magnesium deficiency, as well as significant reduction in antibody levels. Iron deficiency causes decreased numbers of T and B lymphocytes. Iron deficiency reduces the ability of macrophages to kill and digest microbes. Even slight excess of iron, however, favors bacterial and yeast growth, so those plagued with serious bacterial or yeast infections might be prudent to temporarily halt iron supplementation (especially high doses of iron). The abnormality in cellular immune function (phagocytes) Zinc is a synergist with A in preventing thymus and lymph atrophy from stress, injury, surgery, aging, radiation and chronic infection. Zinc deficiency causes severe depression of antibody production and causes severe depletion of both T-and B-lymphocyte populations. Zinc deficiency impairs PGE-1 synthesis from GLA. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant and key partner / synergist with Vitamin E. It is essential for a key enzyme, glutathione peroxidase, which detoxifies hydrogen peroxide that leaks into the tissues from the antimicrobial activity of phagocytes. Selenium stimulates increased antibody response to germ infections as much as a 30-fold increased antibody response to germ infections, as much as a 30-fold increase in some experiments. A recent study showed that people in the lowest tenth of blood selemium levels have a six-times higher incidence of cancer than those in the top tenth.” Organic germanium (Ge-132) increases the activity of gammainterferon, a key body-produced immunostimulant. “In both healthy human volunteers and cancer and rheumatoid arthritis patients, Ge-132 normalized T- and B-lymphocyte function, NK (natural killer) cell proliferation, and antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity, and numbers of antibody forming cells”.
