The two lawyers said they made the decision for business reasons – but also for the sake of a friendship that goes back to when they met as college freshmen in 1986.

“We’ve been very close friends since we lived in the same corridor in the dorm at Miami University, and we’re still the best of friends,” Jump said. Koffel said it will be nice to focus more on that friendship without business getting in the way.

The two said their practices have gone in different directions over the years, so it makes to sense to divide the firm. Koffel focuses on criminal defense, especially drunken driving cases, while Jump represents individuals, families and small businesses in bankruptcies, debt settlements and restructurings, property foreclosures and mortgage mediation.

“We each had our own lawyers and staff,” Jump said. “There was not a lot of commonality in our practices.”

Four of the firm’s attorneys and 12 staff members will stay with Jump. The other four lawyers and four staffers will go with Koffel.

Jump and his team will inherit the firm’s offices at 2130 Arlington Ave. Koffel’s team will move into offices in the Watermark Island building near Grandview Heights, effective November 15.
