Oct. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- The Society of Certified Senior Advisors is pleased to announce the addition of the World Alzheimer Report 2010 to our website.  Provided by Alzheimer ’s Disease International (ADI), this report focuses on the economic impact of dementia and contains the most inclusive and current findings on this common yet very misunderstood disease. According to the report, it is estimated that 35.6 million people are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia worldwide with an expected increase to 65.7 million by 2030 and 115.4 million by 2050.

Dementia is a disease that affects one’s memory, thinking and behavior leading to the inability to perform everyday tasks. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease which accounts for 50 to 70 percent of all dementia cases.

A quick look at what’s inside:

Excerpt from the World Alzheimer Report 2010:

“The total estimated worldwide costs of dementia are US$604 billion in 2010."

“If dementia were a country, it would be the world’s 18th largest economy, ranking between Turkey and Indonesia. If it were a company, it would be the world’s largest by annual revenue exceeding Wal-Mart (US$414 billion) and Exxon Mobil (US$311 billion).”

“Costs of informal care (unpaid care provided by families and others) and the direct costs of social care (provided by community care professionals and in residential home settings) contribute similar proportions (42%) of total costs worldwide, while direct medical care costs are much lower (16%).”

“There is an urgent need to develop cost-effective packages of medical and social care that meet the needs of people with dementia and their caregivers across the course of the illness, and evidence-based prevention strategies. Governments and health and social care systems need to be adequately prepared for the future, and must seek ways now to improve the lives of people with dementia and their caregivers.”
