Hockey Team Challenges Vitamin D Experiment

Oct. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- (Columbus – October 29, 2010) The doctor was in for the Columbus Cottonmouths today; but not because there were any injuries or illnesses – it’s because the SPHL team was proposed a new kind of challenge. Dr. Jan McBarron, bariatrician at Georgia Bariatrics, and husband and owner of Peachtree Natural Foods, Duke Liberatore, asked the players to put vitamin D to the test this season.

The idea for the experiment stems from the fact that last year the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team ended up finding victory in the 2010 Stanley Cup finals. Interestingly enough, this was after they were given vitamin D supplements prior to their season. “If the Blackhawks started winning games after taking vitamin D, why not try this out with the Cottonmouths?” asked Liberatore.

Dr. McBarron, in partnership with Peachtree Natural Foods and Vita Logic Vitamins, then set out to create a structured supplement regimen that included Vita Logic’s Daily Extra multivitamin, and 1500 IU a day of Vitamin D3 to be taken daily throughout the season.

On Thursday, Dr. McBarron spent time delivering the vitamins to the 18 players and explained the many benefits of the vitamin including: endurance enhancement, strengthening the immune system, promoting bone density as well as maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. “It is prudent that you build a strong foundation by taking Vitamin D-3 with a good multivitamin and mineral,” she instructed.

Not to be excluded in the supplement plan were Head Coach Jerome Bechard, the Cottonmouth’s equipment manager, athletic trainer and of course, “Boomer” the mascot.
