Random Acts of Poetry Celebrates One Year of Word Play

In its first year of existence, Random Acts of Poetry reached and inspired many people -- both online and on the street. Creator, Word Is Born Raconteur and Facebook Poet Laureate Dylan Barmmer looks forward to making even more poetry.

Nov. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- SAN DIEGO – When one hears the word “poetry,” many things might come to mind.

A man screaming “SAVE THE BREASTS!” in front of a pinked-out surfer statue is not usually one of them. Or the same man reading a poem between monkey bar pullups. Or while standing naked in front of a bathroom mirror.

Then again, Dylan Barmmer is not your average poet. And Random Acts of Poetry is no ordinary spoken word endeavor.

Since Random Acts of Poetry first emerged from the recesses of his wildly creative mind a year ago, the San Diego, CA-based Barmmer has written, performed, filmed and shared over 40 original creations. From passionate poems alongside the iconic “Cardiff Kook” in his adopted hometown to a haiku on a back road in Ojai to spoken word ambushes in Santa Barbara, Barmmer has captured and released them all through cyberspace via his popular Facebook page (www.facebook.com/dbarmmer) and the YouTube channel of his creative copywriting consortium, Word Is Born (www.youtube.com/wordisborntv). All videos are shot in colorful HD.

There’s even been a pre-colonic poem, a faked “aumgasm” in a yoga studio, a free-flow rap beside a kid spinning a medical marijuana sign and an “anti-poem” constructed from angry Mel Gibson rants. It seems nothing is too weird, mundane or “unpoetic” for the 36-year-old Barmmer, who has crafted a reputation as an innovative, entertaining and passionate performance poet since he was let go from his advertising copywriting gig (www.prlog.org/10516525-san-diego-writer-and-poet-turns-job-loss-into-gain.html) in mid-January.

But Random Acts of Poetry is about so much more than being weird on camera. Barmmer views poetry as a sort of “healing art”, and believes poetry is within – and around – all of us. He started writing and performing again after a decade-long layoff shortly after he quit drinking, and much of his work is inspired and influenced by personal stories of struggle, growth and healing. He also draws extensively from his yoga practice, and blogs on popular website ElephantJournal.com as The Mad Yogi Poet (www.elephantjournal.com/author/dylan-barmmer). The self-anointed Poet Laureate of Facebook (www.prlog.org/10953090-san-diego-man-anointed-first-poet-laureate-of-facebook.html) also writes people spontaneous poems in random locations, and is often told his work amuses, amazes and inspires.

Barmmer has many more hopes, aspirations and ideas for Random Acts of Poetry, including taking his unique show on the road more. To this end, he has created an online fundraising page (www.indiegogo.com/Random-Acts-of-Poetry). Anyone donating $5 or more before Jan. 1, 2011 will receive passionate, poetic prizes.

“I strongly believe that poetry has the power to inspire, authenticate and heal like few other things,” said Barmmer. “Random Acts of Poetry is my passion and my gift, and I absolutely love sharing it. This is just the beginning of something special.”
