The Pepsi Refresh Contest: Programs Provided by the United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF)

The mission of UBCF is to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by and afflicted with breast cancer.  UBCF provides financial support to woman and their families by giving access to preventative and holistic therapies, never denying anyone service regardless of age, race, gender or income, while also giving grants to hospitals active in the research for a cure.  The most important fact is that the United Breast Cancer Foundation came about to ease the stress and strain that cancer can cause a patient and their families, while creating & promoting health and wellness.

Here are the various programs offered through the United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF).  Some are very unique in nature, but all require additional funding which can be provided by the Pepsi Refresh Project.  The grant given will secure the assistance for many more families suffering from the stress and strain breast cancer causes than is currently available at this time.  The different programs offered are:

Free Breast Screening:  Many women at risk for breast cancer in this country are under insured or do not have any health insurance at all.  UBCF is proud to offer the community free or low cost breast screenings and follow-up care at their local hospitals and healthcare centers.  UBCF works closely with hospitals and healthcare centers, covering the costs of a breast screening and any necessary follow-up work for patients who otherwise would not have access to proper medical care.  UBCF funds a variety of breast screening technologies such as: mammography, ultrasound/sonography, thermography, and MRI.

Individual Grants:  UBCF is proud to offer this unique service to women and families affected by breast cancer.  Through individual grants, UBCF can assist those in financial difficulty pay for and receive critical services and products.  Assistance often includes help with medical bills, living expenses, medical insurance, prescription medication, prosthetic devices and wellness services.

Audrey B. Mastroianni College Scholarship Fund:  UBCF has created a scholarship fund for college bound students of single parent homes.  It is designed to help students who have suffered a loss due to breast cancer that are in need of financial assistance in order to make their higher education dreams a reality.  The College Fund was set up in honor of Audrey B. Mastroianni, an educator and a firm believer in education and continued personal enrichment.

Holistic Care:  UBCF believes it is critical that a patient be treated as a whole person. This includes not only traditional medical approaches to breast cancer, but also caring for the individual's emotional and spiritual well-being.  Therapies often include dietary counseling, nutritional supplements, mind/body therapies, energy healing, reflexology, lymphatic massage, acupressure, and acupuncture.  Services are tailored to individual needs and are conducted in conjunction with conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Working with the mind-body-spirit connection is just as vital as treating the tumor.

Free Breast Reconstruction:  UBCF assists women with breast reconstructive surgery at little or no cost to them. It is imperative for a women recovering from breast cancer to have every opportunity to regain her confidence.  Making a reconstruction decision can be complicated for any woman.  Through opportunities such as this one, reconstructive surgery can help a women feel whole; both spiritually and physically.

Child Sponsorship: UBCF is financially assisting children whose families have been directly affected by breast cancer.  Our funds assist these children in many ways; from paying medical & dental bills to purchasing school supplies, food, and clothing.  We continue to follow the progress of all the children that UBCF sponsors through the years and aid them in achieving their full potential so they may impact their communities for the better.

Domestic Services:  UBCF is delighted to support patients and families managing breast cancer with a variety of domestic services to help reduce the daily stress of managing a healthy home. These services range from house cleaning assistance to grocery shopping services.

Individuals can apply for grants to benefit a variety of projects and site visitors can vote for the best ideas for funding.
