ACL injuries may be quite common among athletes and other people, but in the canine world, it's known as a cruciate ligament rupture. It's a painful injury for a great many dogs that normally will not resolve without surgery.

Dr. David Brdecka, of Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals, says cruciate ligament surgery corrects what can either be the result of an injury or a degenerative condition. "It's by far, my most common procedure," says Dr. Brdecka, a board certified veterinary surgeon.

The need for this surgery has increased since pets have become heavier, putting greater pressure on the animals' joints.
