Nov. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Tropospheric ozone, also known as low level ozone, is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a pollutant.  It can be generated in populated areas by sunlight reacting with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the air.  Both industry and vehicle exhaust are major contributors of these gases.

Ozone consists of three oxygen atoms and in the upper atmosphere helps protect the planet from harmful ultraviolet light.  However, ozone in the lower atmosphere is an air pollutant that can cause respiratory problems for humans and animals and can cause damage to photosynthesis in some sensitive plants.

In May of 2008 the EPA lowered its ozone standard from 80 ppb to 75 ppb, the WHO recommends 51 ppb.  High levels of ozone are known to cause respiratory problems and reduce lung function.  It is also a trigger for some people who suffer from asthma.  Many metropolitan areas across the United States monitor and post information about ozone levels.

EC2, Inc., a leading provider of environmental testing services across Illinois and the Chicago area, has extensive experience testing for ozone in commercial, industrial and residential settings.  “Minimizing exposure to ozone is important for people’s health,” reported Ed Chambers, President of EC2.  “EC2 utilizes OSHA Method 214 for ozone sampling.  Using this method an air sample is collected that reacts with the nitrite impregnated on the filter collection device and converts it to nitrate via oxidation.  This allows for accurate ozone level readings.”
