Nov 19, 2010 – Manhattan Beach, CA (AWWN) – Amigos Sin Barreras/Friends Without Barriers (Amigos), Redondo Beach, California Nonprofit Organization has been chosen to receive the prestigious Jefferson Award and will be profiled tonight by ABC7 6 O'Clock Television News in Los Angeles.  A supreme example of "Kernels of Hope" needed throughout the world, the award is an acknowledgement of the dedicated community work of all involved.

Amigos is a nonprofit organization currently operating two programs in the South Bay of Greater Los Angeles.  Its first program initiated in July 1994 to provide outreach and education, information, referral, and a 24-hour hotline.  Amigos received nonprofit status in July 1995.  

In March 1996, Amigos opened its drop-in center named “Circle of Friends.”  It collaborates with South Bay Family Healthcare Center, Harbor/UCLA Medical Center and South Bay AIDS Network to provide myriad services complementing these agencies.  

Amigos has received very prestigious awards from Government agencies and the private sector.  Its latest is a Congressional Award for Excellence and its founder was named People All Stars Among Us to represent the L.A Dodgers at the All Stars Game in Anaheim on July 13, 2010.

According to Burton Danet, Ph.D., Co-Founder of A Better Community For All (ABC4All), "Alma Martinez' work is an example for people everywhere to support and duplicate.  Her goal is to establish a hospice so clients do not have to die alone.  It is through such 'Kernels of Hope' that the world can become better for all." ABOUT Jefferson Awards

Every day there are good people doing great deeds in our community -- volunteers who are going well beyond their expected duties.  The Jefferson Awards is an award organization founded by Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis in 1972 to encourage and honor people for their contributions through community service.

A Jefferson Awards honoree will be chosen once a month by ABC7, Los Angeles. The honoree will be profiled on Eyewitness News at 6pm.  Alma’s will be profiled on the 6 O'clock News, Friday, November 19, 2010. The honoree will also receive a Jefferson Awards Medal, a $1,000 donation to the charity or community organization of their choice, and will be recognized at a special event hosted by ABC7.

A distinguished panel of community leaders will select one local honoree to attend the National Jefferson Awards festivities in Washington, D.C. That honoree will also be eligible for the prestigious Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award.
