Dec. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Whilst many celebrities, past and present, seize the Christmas market as an opportunity to release a fitness DVD; new research from www.myprotein.com, Europe’s leading online sports nutrition brand, has revealed the top 10 celebrity fitness DVD flops.
Natalie Cassidy’s ‘Then and Now’ workout clinched the top spot as the fitness DVD users were ‘most dissatisfied’ with; shortly followed by Jordan’s ‘The Jordan Workout’ in second place.
Myprotein.com conducted the poll as part of research into the effectiveness of celebrity fitness DVDs, given their popularity as Christmas gifts at this time of year. Given that these products are usually aimed at the female market through the use of female celebrities, 1,924 women aged 18-35 were subsequently polled, asked questions surrounding their experience of the DVDs.
Respondents to the study were initially asked, “Have you ever used a celebrity fitness DVD?” to which 76% answered ‘yes.’ These respondents were then asked to stipulate which DVDs they had used, and to choose which DVDs they were ‘dissatisfied with’ in terms of the fitness regime.
The top 10 celebrity fitness DVDs that users were most dissatisfied with were as follows:
1) ‘Natalie Cassidy’s Then and Now Workout’ – 46%
2) Jordan- ‘The Jordan Workout’ – 41%
3) ‘Hannah Waterman’s Body Blitz’ – 38%
4)’5 Step Fat Attack with Claire Richards from Steps’- 34%
5) ‘Coleen Nolan - Let’s Get Physical’ – 32%
6) ‘Geri Yoga’ (Geri Halliwell) – 26%
7) ‘Danielle Lloyd- Keep Fit, Look Fit’ – 24%
8) ‘Vicky Entwistle- Wow! Weight off workout!’ – 21%
9) ‘Jayne Middlemiss- Love Yoga’ – 17%
10) ’Charlie Brooks – Before and After Workout’- 16%
In contrast, Davina McCall’s ‘Davina Fit’ was voted by 89% of respondents as the celebrity workout DVD with the ‘most satisfactory’ fitness regime.
Of the women taking part in the study who had used a celebrity fitness DVD, 46% admitted that they had only used the DVD once. Just one in ten, 12%, admitted that they regularly used a celebrity workout DVD; whilst one in three, 29%, stated that they used the DVD ‘on occasion.’
Furthermore, two thirds, 67%, of these respondents admitted that they had ‘never seen real results’ from using a celebrity fitness DVD.
Of the respondents who had never used a celebrity fitness DVD, the majority, 44%, explained that it was because they did not believe the workouts would be ‘effective.’ One in five, 21%, believed that celebrity endorsed products were ‘tacky.’
Ross Edgley, expert nutritionist at myprotein.com, gave the following tips on how to lose weight effectively:
1) Increase your protein intake
Eating foods that are high in protein like low fat dairy products, lean meat and eggs has been shown to increase your metabolism quite significantly, since protein requires more energy to digest than carbohydrates or fat.
2) Drink plenty of Green Tea
Consume foods that contain antioxidants for speeding up your metabolism. Green tea will raise your rate of metabolism much more than drinks such as coffee, due to its high antioxidant content.
3) Add Spice to your food
It’s long been known that certain spices affect our metabolic rate by up to 25%, with the ‘spike’ in calorie burn lasting for up to 3 hours after you’ve finished your plate. Spices that are considered particularly effective for this include jalapeno, habanero and cayenne peppers.
4) Hit the weights
If you are really pushed for time and can only visit the gym briefly over the Christmas period, be sure to visit the weights section; since weight training has been shown to increase your metabolism for up to 48 hours after you’ve finished exercising.
5) Sleep
Sleep helps your body produce leptin, the hormone that signals to the brain when you’re full. It is therefore important to make sure you get at least eight hours a night; as if you don’t, your body will produce more of the hormone grehlin which increases your appetite.
Mark Coxhead, head of marketing at myprotein.com, commented on the findings:
“This time of year inevitably sees the release of a new celebrity fitness DVD; so we wanted to look into which ones do the job, and which ones fall short of the mark. Although they can be a good way of putting the fun into home exercise; celebrity workout DVDs rarely produce lasting results, as people simply don’t enjoy having to go through the rigmarole of watching the same programme day in, day out.”
He continued:
“For anyone looking to see lasting results, long-term changes in diet and exercise are really the only way to do it. Although this can seem like a tall order and many would see using a celebrity DVD as ‘the easier route’, making small changes to diet and exercise habits can make the world of difference. No DVD, whatever its claim, can contain a ‘miracle weight loss’ solution. The celebrities endorsing the product have undoubtedly lost weight through a great deal of effort, no matter what they tell you during the workout!”
