Follow on Google News | Water Filters & Filtration Systems for Hexavalent Chromium Water ContaminationA recent report indicates millions of Americans are regularly drinking water contaminated with hexavalent chromium, chromium-6. FreshWaterSystems.com offers FDA approved water filters, and water filtration systems to reduce chromium in your water.
In many cases in life and business, there are trade off’s and we often do not realize the impact on our environment. For decades, chromium has been a widely used industrial chemical in steel and pulp mills, in the tanning of leather, and in the creating of dyes and pigments because of its unique properties. After using this element in the manufacturing process, many businesses have released chromium compounds to the environment via leakage, poor storage, or improper disposal practices. These discharges into the environment have lead to some shocking news being reported by the Environmental Working Group about the chromium-6 contamination of our drinking water. On Monday December 20th, the Environmental Working Group released a report indicating that hexavalent chromium has leached into the ground waters, from which millions of Americans regularly use for drinking, cooking and bathing. This water pollutant, hexavalent chromium, or chromium-6, is an odorless and tasteless chemical that was made famous in the film "Erin Brockovich". To learn more about Chromium water contamination and filter options visit http://www.freshwatersystems.com/ In this most recent study by the Environmental Working Group, drinking water samples were taken from 35 U.S. cities, and a shocking 31 cities were found to have high levels of hexavalent chromium water contamination. The highest concentrations of chromium-6 were found in Norman, OK, Honolulu HI, and Riverside, CA. There are different forms of this element, but Chromium-6 itself is classified as a carcinogen. Yet in the face of mounting evidence of the contaminant's toxic effects, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not set a legal limit for chromium-6 in tap water and does not require water utilities to test for it. In 1998, the EPA’s Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Program classified hexavalent chromium as a known human carcinogen via inhalation, but they did not have the science at that time to be able to classify it as to its potential for human carcinogenicity via ingestion. Currently this is under review, and the EPA is looking to see if any changes need to be made to its current legal limits. With this recent bombshell report from the Environmental Working Group, there are two U.S. senators that are now calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to protect the public from hexavalent chromium water contamination. California's U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein sent a letter to the EPA stating their intentions to introduce a bill next year requiring a new standard be set for chromium 6 levels found in drinking water. The EPA currently only limits total chromium (both chromium 3 & 6) to 100 parts per billion. The State of California is reacting to the news too, and is in the process of proposing a public health goal that limits chromium-6 to only 0.06 parts per billion. So what should you do if you are concerned about your water being contaminated with Chromium-6? The FDA recommends installing a home water filtration system that has been certified to remove/reduce chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium) levels in water. There are many water treatment and purifications systems that can help people in the heavily contaminated areas.
