Models Direct: ‘The King’s Speech’; Changing Attitudes Towards Stammering

Jan. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Models Direct are delighted that ‘The King’s Speech’ has earned Colin Firth, who played King George VI in the film, a ‘best actor’ award at both the Golden Globes and from the British Independent Film Association this year.

For those affected by stammering, or stuttering, suggestions that an Oscar may follow will be great news; encouraging increased awareness of this speech impediment, which is said to affect at least 1% of the population.

The warm portrayal of the King and the sensitivity shown in the film are a far cry from the usual references made to stammering in the media, which are often thoughtless and inaccurate. While minds like Charles Darwin and Sir Isaac Newton are known to have faced challenges related to stammering, this condition has often previously been associated with characters who may be considered a little ‘slow’ or inherently anxious, or whose stammer is simply the butt of a joke. For example ‘Ken’ in ‘A Fish Called Wanda’, and ‘Arkwright’ in the famous BBC sitcom ‘Open All Hours’ provide ample opportunity for misunderstandings and even ridicule of those shown as ‘socially awkward’ stammerers.

We hope that the more accurate view shown by ‘The King’s Speech’ will encourage a new attitude towards stammering and those who deal with it every day.
